Montgomery firefighter arrested after high speed chase tops 140 mph

LOWNDES CO., AL (WSFA)- A Montgomery firefighter was arrested Friday following a high speed chase through Lowndes County, authorities are confirming.

Alabama State Troopers say 21-year-old James Green of Burkville was riding a sport bike on Alabama 21 when Troopers witnessed him driving recklessly.

Troopers tell WSFA 12 News they clocked Green doing 140 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Authorities attempted to initiate a stop of Green's motorcycle through a high speed chase that stretched a distance of approximately eight miles.

The firefighter now faces attempting to elude law enforcement and reckless endangerment charges. Several traffic citations are also pending including operating the motorcycle without a license plate.

LPGA coming back to Prattville in 2014 with 3 mystery sponsors

MOBILE, AL (WSFA)- The announcement was made Tuesday morning that the LPGA Tour will be returning to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in Prattville in the fall of 2014.

The Senator Course at Capitol Hill will be home to the Alabama LPGA Classic presented by the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

The event is being sponsored by three companies that did not want any publicity, so the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is the glue holding the deal together. While the companies' names were not revealed, they are said to be out-of-state, American businesses.

It costs on average between $3 million to $4 million to run
an LPGA Tour. That cost is paid through ticket sales and cities. The actual purse for this tour will be $1 million and will be shared by the three
unidentified companies.

More than 250 rural road and bridge projects scheduled under new Bentley program

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- More than 250 new road and bridge improvement projects have
been scheduled to move forward under the new Rural Assistance Match Program
championed by Gov. Robert Bentley.

The Rural Assistance Match Program, or RAMP, allows rural
areas that couldn't participate in the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation
and Improvement Program (ATRIP) due to a lack of funding the ability to access
the money needed for essential road and bridge improvements.

Previously, 61 of 67 counties in Alabama received funding
through ATRIP which was established by Gov. Bentley in 2012. With the
additional RAMP funding all Alabama counties will now benefit from road and
bridge improvements.

Letter carriers to "Stamp out Hunger" with Saturday food drive

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- On Saturday, May 11, residents across America will be asked to help "Stamp Out Hunger" in the annual U.S. Postal Service Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

The one-day food drive is the nation's largest single-day food drive across America - and even includes Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands.

You can help stamp out hunger as easily as checking your mailbox.

Just leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox on Saturday, May 11. Your letter carrier will pick it up and the items will be delivered to a local food bank.

Examples of non-perishable food items include:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned meat and fish
  • Canned vegetables, fruits and juices
  • Boxed goods (such as cereal)
  • Pasta and rice

Central Alabama Master Gardeners Association's 'lunch & learn' session coming up

The Central Alabama Master Gardeners Association is set to host a "lunch and learn" session each month.

Sessions will be held on the second Wednesday of the month from 12 - 1 p.m.

Manhunt initiated for 4 in Lowndes Co.

LOWNDES CO., AL (WSFA)- The Alabama Department of Corrections and the Lowndes County Sheriff's office are confirming that a manhunt is under way at this hour for 4 people.

Details are limited, but authorities say the hunt started after a traffic stop in Fort Deposit.

The suspect vehicle fled the scene onto Interstate 65 then onto Highway 97 where the four people jumped out and ran in different directions.

Authorities have a tracking dog from Kilby Correctional Facility in the area searching for the people.

No additional information is immediately known. WSFA 12 News has a crew in the area and will have more information as it becomes available.
